Trinidad, CO – A magnitude 2.9 earthquake struck early Thursday morning about 10 kilometers north-northwest of El Moro, just outside Trinidad and near the Piñon Canyon Maneuver Site, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS).
The quake occurred at approximately 2:05 a.m. MDT (08:05 UTC) at a depth of 5 kilometers, with its epicenter located near 37.31°N, 104.50°W.
While the tremor was minor, a few residents near Trinidad and El Moro may have felt light shaking. As of early Thursday, the USGS “Did You Feel It?” system recorded limited responses, and no damage or injuries have been reported.
This area of southern Colorado occasionally experiences small-magnitude seismic activity, often associated with regional fault zones and past mining operations. Thursday morning’s quake follows a quiet period with no significant recent seismic events in the region.
Officials said no alerts or emergency actions are necessary, but residents who experienced shaking are encouraged to report it to the USGS Community Internet Intensity Map to assist with data collection.
