Pueblo, Colorado – Travel across southern Colorado and into northeastern New Mexico could become treacherous beginning Thursday afternoon as a developing winter storm brings accumulating snow, strong winds, and reduced visibility during peak commute hours.

According to the National Weather Service in Pueblo, a Winter Storm Watch is in effect for northern El Paso County, including Black Forest, Monument Ridge, and areas along the Rampart Range below 7,500 feet from Thursday afternoon through Friday morning. Snow totals of 5 to 7 inches are possible, with wind gusts reaching 40 mph. Those conditions could create snow-covered roads and drifting, especially on north-south routes.

The snow threat expands south and west into the Wet Mountains, where 6 to 11 inches of accumulation is possible through Friday afternoon. Walsenburg, Trinidad, and much of Las Animas County could see 4 to 7 inches, along with gusty winds that further reduce visibility. Portions of Highway 160 and secondary mountain roads may become difficult or impassable at times.

In New Mexico, the National Weather Service in Albuquerque has issued a Winter Storm Watch for Union County and Raton Pass from late Thursday night through Friday evening. Snow totals of 2 to 4 inches are expected, with up to 6 inches on Raton Pass. Blowing snow may cause near-whiteout conditions along I-25, particularly Friday morning.

Drivers are urged to avoid non-essential travel during the storm window, allow extra stopping distance, and keep winter emergency kits in vehicles. Additional advisories or upgrades to warnings are possible as the system moves closer.
