Walsenburg, CO – Residents across southern Colorado should prepare for powerful, damaging winds overnight as a High Wind Warning takes effect early Monday, October 20, according to the National Weather Service in Pueblo.
Forecasters say west winds of 30 to 40 mph with gusts up to 75 mph are expected from 2 a.m. to 9 a.m. MDT Monday, impacting the Southern Sangre de Cristo Mountains and the Walsenburg vicinity, including Weston, Cuchara, Stonewall, and Spanish Peaks.
The NWS warns that the strong winds could topple trees and power lines, leading to widespread outages and hazardous driving conditions, especially for high-profile vehicles on mountain passes and open roadways. Residents are advised to stay indoors, secure outdoor objects, and avoid windows during the storm.
Meteorologists urge drivers to use extreme caution during the Monday morning commute as gusts over 70 mph may make travel treacherous across Huerfano County and nearby mountain communities.
