Weston, Colorado – A 3.7 magnitude earthquake struck southern Colorado Saturday morning, shaking the area south of Weston with light tremors but no immediate reports of damage or injury.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the quake hit at 10:19 a.m. MDT, centered 17 kilometers south of Weston, at a depth of 5.0 kilometers. The shaking was classified as light (Intensity IV) and was felt by residents across Las Animas County and parts of northern New Mexico.

While the shallow depth likely amplified the shaking locally, officials say the magnitude was below levels typically associated with structural damage. Seven people have already submitted “Did You Feel It?” responses, confirming minor shaking but no disruptions.

Residents in Trinidad, Aguilar, and Raton, New Mexico, may have noticed light vibrations. Emergency services have not issued any alerts, but Colorado’s Division of Homeland Security advises residents to review earthquake preparedness steps—especially in areas near fault zones.

Though rare, minor quakes like this are not unprecedented in southern Colorado, which occasionally registers seismic activity near the Sangre de Cristo Fault Zone.

The USGS will continue monitoring the region for aftershocks, though none have been reported so far.
