Los Angeles, CA – A Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect tonight for the Eastern San Gabriel Mountains and the Northern Ventura County Mountains, where light additional snowfall may create hazardous evening travel conditions. The advisory, issued by the National Weather Service Los Angeles/Oxnard office, is in effect until 10 p.m. Tuesday.
According to the National Weather Service, snowfall will continue through the evening, adding up to one inch of additional accumulation on top of earlier totals. While amounts are modest, the combination of cold air, falling snow, and existing mountain moisture will lead to slick conditions on roadways above 5,000 feet.
The affected area includes several well-traveled mountain destinations, such as Mount Baldy, Mount Pinos, Wrightwood, Lockwood Valley, Ozena, Mount Wilson, and portions of the Angeles Crest Highway (CA-2). Forecasters warn drivers to be prepared for reduced traction, especially during the evening commute when temperatures fall and surfaces begin to freeze.
The weather service says the biggest impacts tonight will be slippery roads, particularly on winding and shaded stretches of mountain highways. Even light snow can create travel hazards for motorists unfamiliar with winter mountain driving. Officials urge drivers to slow down, keep headlights on, and use caution on steep grades.
The advisory is expected to expire at 10 p.m., after which snow showers should taper off as the storm system moves east. Temperatures overnight are likely to remain below freezing in the higher elevations, creating the potential for icy patches through early Wednesday morning.
For updated road conditions, the National Weather Service recommends travelers dial 511 or check state transportation alerts.
