California – Rain darkens freeways, puddles spread along curbs, and storm clouds hang low as Southern California closes out 2025 under a developing Flood Watch. Wet pavement and rising runoff are expected to shape travel from New Year’s Eve through New Year’s Day, with impacts stretching into the first weekend of 2026.
According to the National Weather Service in Los Angeles/Oxnard, a Flood Watch remains in effect from this evening through Thursday evening for much of Los Angeles and Ventura counties. Forecasters warn that moderate to heavy rainfall could trigger flooding in low-lying areas, urban streets, creeks, and burn scar zones as a strong Pacific storm moves inland.
Across Los Angeles County, the highest concern centers on poor-drainage neighborhoods, canyon roads, and coastal routes. Downtown Los Angeles, the San Fernando Valley, Santa Monica Mountains, and foothill communities could see rapid ponding on surface streets. Caltrans crews may monitor stretches of U.S. 101, I-5 through the Grapevine, and canyon corridors where debris flow is possible.
Rain intensity is expected to increase later today and persist into New Year’s Day. Gusty winds may accompany heavier showers, reducing visibility during evening travel. While temperatures remain mild, cooler air behind the system late week could set the stage for slick conditions during early morning commutes.
Residents are urged to clear storm drains, avoid flooded roadways, and allow extra time for holiday travel. Conditions may deteriorate quickly during heavier bursts of rain, especially after sunset.
Additional advisories are possible if rainfall rates increase. Travelers heading into the first weekend of 2026 should stay alert and check updates frequently. Seeing flooding in your neighborhood? Share what conditions look like where you are.
