According to the National Weather Service and the Weather Prediction Center, a High Risk (Level 4 of 4) of excessive rainfall is in effect for parts of Southern California. Rainfall rates may overwhelm drainage systems, trigger debris flows, and flood roadways that rarely see high water. Burn scar areas remain especially vulnerable.
Meteorologists are tracking a deep plume of Pacific moisture streaming inland. That moisture will continue feeding steady to heavy rain across Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, and San Bernardino counties. Some thunderstorms may enhance rainfall totals, reducing visibility and creating sudden ponding on freeways.
For now, temperatures stay mild, hovering in the upper 50s to low 60s. However, the wet ground sets the stage for problems later. As cooler air arrives after Christmas, flash freezing could occur overnight where water lingers on pavement. That raises concerns for black ice, especially on bridges, canyon roads, and shaded stretches of I-5 and I-15.
Travelers returning home this weekend should plan extra time. Wet pavement, debris-covered lanes, and potential road closures could slow post-Christmas traffic on Saturday, December 27. Conditions may change quickly after sunset.
