San Diego, CA – Travel to Big Bear, Lake Arrowhead and Idyllwild could become impossible as heavy snow and wind gusts up to 75 mph slam Southern California’s mountain communities through 10 p.m. Thursday.

According to the National Weather Service in San Diego, a Winter Storm Warning remains in effect for the San Bernardino and Riverside County mountains. Snowfall totals through Wednesday will range from 6 to 12 inches between 5,000 and 6,000 feet, 12 to 20 inches from 6,000 to 7,000 feet, and more than 24 inches above 7,500 feet. An additional 3 to 8 inches is expected Thursday. Snow levels will fall from around 5,000 feet to between 3,500 and 4,500 feet by Wednesday morning.

Strong southwest winds of 25 to 35 mph will gust to 65 mph, with isolated 75 mph gusts along desert-facing slopes and into the Lucerne Valley foothills. Those winds could down trees and power lines while creating whiteout conditions in exposed areas.

Cajon Pass along I-15 may see accumulating snow early Wednesday and again Thursday, increasing the risk of chain controls or temporary closures.

Officials urge residents and travelers to delay mountain trips, secure outdoor items and check Caltrans via 511 before departure. Conditions will remain dangerous through Thursday night as snow and wind continue.
