Los Angeles, California – Sub-freezing overnight temperatures are prompting a Freeze Warning across multiple Southern California valleys through Friday morning, Jan. 9, threatening crops, plants, and outdoor plumbing.

According to the National Weather Service in Los Angeles/Oxnard, temperatures are expected to drop as low as 25 to 28 degrees from midnight overnight into 9 a.m. Friday, Jan. 9, creating widespread frost and freeze conditions in inland areas.

The Freeze Warning covers the Cuyama Valley, Santa Ynez Valley, Ojai Valley, Eastern Antelope Valley Foothills, and Western Antelope Valley Foothills. Impacted communities include Ojai, Solvang, Santa Ynez, Los Olivos, New Cuyama, Lake Cachuma, Pearblossom, Valyermo, Lake Palmdale, and Elizabeth Lake.

In the Western Antelope Valley Foothills, the freeze is occurring alongside a Wind Advisory that remains in effect until 1 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 11. Northeast winds of 20 to 30 mph, with gusts reaching 50 mph, are expected. Officials warn that wet soils may increase the likelihood of downed tree limbs and isolated power outages.

The National Weather Service cautions that frost and freezing temperatures may damage unprotected outdoor plumbing and kill sensitive vegetation. Agricultural interests and residents are urged to take protective measures before temperatures fall overnight.

Freeze warnings are issued when temperatures are expected to reach levels that can cause damage in regions not accustomed to prolonged cold. Inland valleys and foothill areas are especially susceptible during clear, calm overnight conditions.

Early-morning commuters on Friday, Jan. 9, may encounter frost-covered surfaces in colder locations, particularly in foothill communities.
