Bishop, CA – Westerly winds are creating dangerous travel conditions along U.S. Highway 395 today, as a High Wind Warning remains in effect for the Eastern Sierra Slopes and Owens Valley through 11 p.m. Thursday.
According to the National Weather Service Las Vegas, peak gusts between 55 and 65 mph are expected from the west and southwest, especially near exposed areas such as Independence, Lone Pine, and Mt. Whitney. Winds may reach 80 mph in higher terrain zones like Aspendell, prompting serious concerns for crosswinds along the 395 corridor.
Strong crosswinds could impact high-profile vehicles and cause travel delays. Drivers are urged to exercise caution, especially through Westgard Pass and other wind-prone areas. Blowing dust and debris may reduce visibility on open stretches of highway.
In addition to Owens Valley, Wind Advisories are active in San Bernardino County until 11 a.m. Friday. Gusts up to 50 mph are forecast in Barstow, Victorville, and nearby communities.
Residents should secure outdoor items, avoid unnecessary travel, and monitor updates. Wind-sensitive infrastructure, including power lines and trees, may be affected, increasing the potential for outages or road blockages.
