San Diego, Calif. – Strong northeast winds associated with a Santa Ana wind event will continue to impact parts of Southern California from Friday, Jan. 9, through Sunday afternoon, Jan. 11, according to the National Weather Service in San Diego.
A Wind Advisory is in effect for the San Diego County Valleys from 8 a.m. PST Friday, Jan. 9, through 1 p.m. PST Sunday, Jan. 11. Sustained northeast winds of 15 to 30 mph, with gusts between 35 and 55 mph, are expected. The strongest winds will occur east of Interstate 15 and near the foothills, with peak gusts most likely Friday night into Saturday, Jan. 10. Cities affected include Escondido, Poway, El Cajon, La Mesa, San Marcos, and Santee.
Another Wind Advisory remains in effect through 1 p.m. PST Sunday, Jan. 11, for the Riverside County Mountains, San Diego County Mountains, and the San Gorgonio Pass near Banning. In these areas, northeast winds of 25 to 35 mph with gusts up to 60 mph are expected. Mountain communities such as Julian, Pine Valley, Idyllwild-Pine Cove, Desert Hot Springs, and Banning may experience the strongest and most persistent winds.
In Orange County inland areas, including Anaheim, Santa Ana, Irvine, Mission Viejo, Fullerton, and Garden Grove, a Wind Advisory remains in effect until 1 p.m. PST Saturday, Jan. 10. Northeast winds of 15 to 25 mph with gusts up to 45 mph are expected, particularly east of Interstate 5 and near the foothills of the Santa Ana Mountains.
The National Weather Service warns that these strong winds may blow around unsecured outdoor objects, down tree limbs, and result in isolated power outages. Travel may be difficult at times, especially for high-profile vehicles traveling through mountain passes and exposed roadways.
Residents are urged to secure loose outdoor items and exercise extra caution while driving during the Friday through weekend period, Jan. 9–11, when wind gusts will be strongest.
