Phoenix, AZ – A Flood Watch remains in effect across parts of southern California today as moderate to heavy rainfall threatens flooding in and around Joshua Tree National Park and Chiriaco Summit.

According to the National Weather Service in Phoenix, the Flood Watch is active from 4 a.m. PST Saturday through this evening, covering western portions of Joshua Tree National Park, including Lost Horse–Keys Village, Cottonwood Visitor Center, and the Chiriaco Summit area along Interstate 10.

Forecasters warn that excessive rainfall may lead to dangerous runoff, resulting in flooding along creeks, washes, low-lying terrain, and flood-prone roadways. Of particular concern is Box Canyon Road, which may quickly become impassable during heavier rainfall. Even brief downpours can trigger flash flooding in desert terrain where soil absorption is limited.

According to the NWS, the incoming system is expected to deliver the heaviest precipitation within Joshua Tree National Park, where rocky slopes and narrow canyons are especially vulnerable to sudden water rises and debris flows. Drivers, hikers, and park visitors are urged to stay alert and monitor real-time updates throughout the day.

Residents and travelers should prepare for rapidly changing conditions, especially during the morning and afternoon hours when the highest rainfall rates are expected. The NWS encourages the public to remain ready for potential Flood Warnings if the situation worsens.
