Carpinteria, CA – A light earthquake struck just southeast of Carpinteria late Tuesday morning, briefly shaking parts of the Santa Barbara County coastline.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey and the California Integrated Seismic Network, the magnitude 3.0 earthquake occurred at 10:51 a.m. local time about 6 kilometers southeast of Carpinteria. The quake originated at a shallow depth of approximately 2.6 kilometers, which can sometimes allow shaking to be felt more noticeably near the epicenter.

Preliminary community reports submitted to the USGS indicate light shaking in the area, with intensity levels around IV on the Modified Mercalli scale. At that level, residents may notice indoor rattling of dishes or windows, though damage is unlikely.

Communities along the Santa Barbara County coast—including Carpinteria, Summerland and parts of eastern Santa Barbara—may have felt the brief jolt. No injuries or damage were immediately reported following the event.

Small earthquakes of this magnitude are relatively common in Southern California as stress shifts along regional fault systems near the Pacific and North American plate boundary.

Seismologists will continue monitoring the region for aftershocks, though quakes of this size typically produce few or none.
