Joshua Tree National Park, California – Wind gusts up to 60 mph are sweeping across the Southern California deserts this afternoon, creating dangerous crosswinds and blowing dust that could drop visibility below a mile through early Friday.

According to the National Weather Service in Phoenix, a Wind Advisory remains in effect until midnight for the western portion of Joshua Tree National Park, the Chuckwalla Mountains and Chiriaco Summit. West winds of 15 to 25 mph will gust to 40 mph, especially along exposed desert highways.

Farther south, southwest Imperial County faces stronger winds through 5 a.m. Friday. Gusts there could reach 60 mph, particularly near Mountain Spring and along Interstate 8. High-profile vehicles traveling through open stretches of desert are most at risk of sudden crosswinds.

Blowing sand and dust may briefly reduce visibility to well under one mile, especially near dry lake beds and construction zones. Drivers along I-8 and State Route 62 should slow down, keep both hands on the wheel and be prepared for sudden gusts.

Residents are urged to secure outdoor furniture and lightweight objects before sunset. Winds will gradually weaken after sunrise Friday, but additional statements are possible if gusts persist overnight.
