Los Angeles, CA – Boaters and coastal residents should prepare for stormy conditions today as thunderstorms are possible across Southern California waters, according to the National Weather Service (NWS).

The NWS issued a marine weather statement early Saturday warning that thunderstorms and showers may develop this afternoon and evening south of Point Conception, including the San Pedro Channel out to Santa Catalina Island and the outer waters near Santa Cruz Island. Forecasters noted storms are most likely near the Los Angeles and Ventura County coasts.

According to the statement, any storms that form could bring dangerous conditions for mariners and beachgoers, including locally gusty winds, rough seas, heavy rainfall with reduced visibility, lightning, and even small hail.

Officials advise boaters, fishermen, and recreational water users to remain alert and consider postponing trips until conditions improve. Lightning and sudden wind shifts can pose life-threatening hazards on open water.

The advisory covers the East Santa Barbara Channel, the inner waters from Point Mugu to San Mateo Point, and the outer waters extending to San Clemente Island.

Residents and visitors planning to be on or near the water Saturday evening are urged to monitor updated forecasts and heed warnings from local authorities.
