Santa Barbara, CA – Motorists traveling through the Southern California high country face a wet and wintry transition as a cold system drops snow levels to 4,500 feet by late Sunday night. While the storm begins at higher peaks, the primary threat to regional infrastructure—including the critical Interstate 5 and Highway 14 corridors—will intensify through the Monday morning commute, bringing slippery conditions and wind gusts up to 40 mph.

According to the National Weather Service in Los Angeles/Oxnard, a Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for the Santa Barbara and Ventura County mountains starting at 9 p.m. Saturday, with the San Gabriel Mountains and the I-5 corridor following suit at 3 a.m. Sunday. Total snow accumulations of up to 6 inches are expected above 6,000 feet. While the “Grapevine” section of Interstate 5 is not currently forecast to see major accumulation, meteorologists warn of a rain and snow mix Monday morning that could create sudden traction issues for high-speed traffic.

The storm’s impact will be most visible across the San Rafael and Topatopa Mountains, as well as mountain communities like Wrightwood, Mount Baldy, and Gorman. Caltrans officials urge caution for those utilizing the Angeles Crest Highway and the Tejon Pass, where visibility may fluctuate rapidly due to wind-driven wet snow. Snow levels will hover around 7,000 feet through Sunday morning before plunging significantly lower during the tail end of the event, potentially affecting lower-elevation mountain roads that rarely see frozen precipitation.

Commuters should plan for extra travel time and maintain significant following distance on mountain grades. If you are heading into the interior mountains, ensure your vehicle is prepared for cold temperatures and carry extra water and warm clothing. Conditions are expected to remain hazardous until the advisory expires at 11 a.m. Monday, though damp and slick roads may persist through the afternoon.
