Tucson, Arizona — Valley rain and mountain snow will continue across southern Arizona through tonight, creating travel impacts both in low-lying areas and at higher elevations, according to the National Weather Service in Tucson.
Forecasters say additional rainfall totals of 0.1 to 0.5 inches are expected across valley locations, including the Tucson metro area, with locally higher amounts possible in portions of Cochise and Santa Cruz counties. Periods of on-and-off shower activity are expected to persist through Saturday night into early Sunday morning.
The rainfall may lead to ponding on roadways, particularly in areas with poor drainage. Water runoff is also likely in normally dry washes, prompting drivers to use caution during overnight travel and early morning commutes.
In the mountains, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect above 7,000 feet, where an additional 4 to 8 inches of snow is expected through tonight. Snow accumulation will impact higher terrain areas including Mount Lemmon, Mount Wrightson, and surrounding peaks, where wintry driving conditions are likely, especially along mountain roadways and passes.
The National Weather Service notes that while precipitation will be intermittent, stronger showers may produce a rumble of thunder, particularly later today. Temperatures at higher elevations will remain cold enough to support snow accumulation, while valley locations stay rain-dominated.
Travelers planning trips into mountain areas are urged to be prepared for slick roads, reduced visibility, and rapidly changing conditions. Drivers should allow extra travel time and check road conditions before departure.
While widespread flooding is not expected, officials emphasize that even modest rainfall can create hazards in desert environments. Residents are encouraged to monitor local forecasts and updates as precipitation continues into early Sunday.
