Jackson, KY – Dense valley fog is settling across much of eastern and southeastern Kentucky early Thursday, turning overnight drives and the morning commute especially hazardous. Motorists from Laurel County north to Fleming and Rowan counties, including Somerset, London, Morehead, and Pikeville, can expect sharply reduced visibility in valleys—at times dropping below a quarter mile.

According to the National Weather Service in Jackson, clear skies, light winds, and leftover humidity are fueling the rapid spread of fog, especially in low-lying areas. The fog is expected to linger into the mid-morning hours, with the densest patches developing along river valleys, back roads, and rural hollows across the region.

Travelers should allow extra time and use low beam headlights if driving before 9 a.m. in affected areas. Local officials urge drivers to slow down, watch for sudden changes in visibility, and avoid using high beams, which can make conditions worse in thick fog.

The fog will gradually lift as the sun rises and temperatures climb, but isolated trouble spots could persist on shaded roads and in valleys through late morning. Further statements or advisories may be issued if conditions worsen. Plan for slower travel and use extra caution until the fog fully clears.
