Philadelphia, Pa. – Drivers across southeastern Pennsylvania should prepare for wet roads and slower commutes as widespread showers return Thursday. Heavy rain could develop by midday, with some thunderstorms strong enough to create ponding on highways and delays on I-95 and I-76.

According to the National Weather Service, rain chances climb sharply from Thursday morning into the evening, with the heaviest bands moving through Philadelphia, Montgomery, and Delaware Counties by late day. Accumulations may reach a half inch or more in some neighborhoods, raising concerns for localized flooding in poor drainage areas.

Wednesday offers only spotty showers, but conditions deteriorate Thursday with higher humidity and widespread rain. Afternoon thunderstorms may bring gusty winds near 20 mph, especially in the city and surrounding suburbs. SEPTA riders should allow extra time, as slippery platforms and slower service are likely.

Friday won’t offer much relief, with another round of rain possible. Showers are expected across South Jersey and the Philadelphia metro during the afternoon, although cooler air will filter in by Saturday. Highs fall into the upper 70s, and drier air returns late in the weekend.

Residents are urged to avoid unnecessary travel during the heaviest downpours, keep storm drains clear, and check flash flood warnings through Thursday night. With the first full week of fall underway, cooler evenings are on the horizon, hinting at an early taste of late-October chill next week.
