Wilmington, N.C. – A faint breeze drifts through the pines near dawn Thursday as clear skies stretch from Surf City to Whiteville. The air feels light, crisp, and dry — a calm start that hides a growing daytime hazard. By late morning, fire danger increases sharply across southeast North Carolina, driven by gusty west winds and humidity levels dropping into the 20s.

The National Weather Service in Wilmington warns of an elevated risk for fire spread from 11 a.m. through 7 p.m. Thursday, especially across inland areas including Lumberton, Elizabethtown, and Burgaw. Coastal spots like Wilmington, Southport, and Carolina Beach will see slightly higher humidity but still face dangerous conditions if fires ignite. Winds could gust up to 15 mph, helping small flames spread quickly in dry grass and brush.

Residents are urged to avoid outdoor burning and check with local authorities before lighting any fires. If you must burn, have suppression tools — water hoses, shovels, or extinguishers — close by. Even small embers can spark trouble in today’s dry setup.

Outside of the fire concern, the rest of the weather remains beautifully fall-like. Sunshine dominates through Saturday, with highs around 70–73°F inland and upper 60s near the beaches. Winds ease Friday as drier air lingers, setting up a perfect start to the weekend.

By late Sunday or Monday, moisture returns and could bring scattered showers — a welcome relief from the current dry streak. For now, though, the Carolinas stay sun-soaked and quiet, with a reminder that fall’s calm days can still carry risk when nature dries out.
