Wilmington, North Carolina – Snow continues to pile up across southeastern North Carolina and northeastern South Carolina early Sunday, creating widespread travel disruptions as roads become snow-covered and increasingly hazardous.
According to the National Weather Service in Wilmington, a Winter Storm Warning remains in effect through Sunday afternoon for coastal and inland communities from Wilmington and Lumberton to Myrtle Beach and Georgetown. Additional snowfall of 3 to 6 inches is expected across southeastern North Carolina, with inland areas and much of northeastern South Carolina picking up another 1 to 3 inches before the storm tapers off later today.
Statewide impacts are centered on major travel corridors and coastal communities. In New Hanover, Brunswick, Columbus, Bladen, and Robeson counties, drivers are encountering slick roads and reduced visibility. Conditions are similarly dangerous across the South Carolina border in Horry, Georgetown, Florence, Marion, Dillon, and Darlington counties. Cities including Wilmington, Leland, Whiteville, Lumberton, Myrtle Beach, North Myrtle Beach, Conway, and Georgetown are seeing steady snowfall that is quickly covering untreated roads.
Emergency officials urge residents to avoid non-essential travel until conditions improve. Those who must drive should carry emergency supplies and allow extra time. Road conditions can be checked by calling 511 in either state. The winter storm warning remains in effect through Sunday afternoon, and officials caution that impacts may linger even after snowfall ends.
