Birmingham, Alabama – A hotter-than-average pattern is expected to settle over much of the Southeast during the final week of July, with above-normal temperatures favored across Alabama, Florida, and neighboring Gulf Coast states from July 26 through August 1. The extended outlook points to a return of widespread summer heat and humidity, increasing the potential for elevated heat index values each afternoon.

According to the National Weather Service and the Climate Prediction Center’s 8- to 14-day temperature outlook, much of Alabama and Florida falls within an area with a 50% to 70% probability of above-normal temperatures. The warmer pattern is expected to extend across Georgia, Mississippi, and portions of the central Gulf Coast, signaling a sustained stretch of midsummer warmth.

Although the outlook does not forecast specific daily temperatures, it indicates that afternoon highs are more likely to run above late July averages. Combined with Gulf moisture, the heat could produce oppressive humidity, making it feel significantly hotter during the peak afternoon hours.

Communities including Birmingham, Montgomery, Mobile, Huntsville, Pensacola, Tallahassee, Jacksonville, Orlando, Tampa, Miami, and Fort Myers should prepare for increased cooling demands and heightened heat stress during outdoor activities. Residents are encouraged to stay hydrated, wear lightweight clothing, take frequent breaks in air-conditioned spaces, and check on older adults, young children, and anyone without reliable cooling.

While scattered afternoon and evening thunderstorms remain typical this time of year and may provide localized cooling, they are not expected to significantly alter the broader warm pattern. The Climate Prediction Center will continue refining the outlook as the period approaches, with updated forecasts offering more detail on temperatures and rainfall heading into the final days of July and the start of August.
