Virginia – Beachgoers heading into Friday evening in Virginia Beach face a heightened rip current risk, with conditions expected to remain dangerous until 8 p.m. According to the National Weather Service in Wakefield, southeast Virginia and parts of northeast North Carolina should avoid swimming in the Atlantic as moderate rip currents remain active through tonight.
Travelers along U.S. Route 60 and Atlantic Avenue should also take caution, as heavy surf could impact beach access and create hazardous conditions for anyone venturing near the shoreline. Officials urge swimmers to stay out of unguarded waters and to follow lifeguard instructions.
Friday will otherwise stay sunny with highs near 86, offering dry conditions for evening events. Winds from the southwest at 10 to 15 mph could make for a breezy night, but skies remain mostly clear.
By Saturday, moisture increases, and a chance of showers enters the forecast after sunset. Mostly sunny skies during the day will give way to rain potential Saturday night, with about a 30% chance of showers.
Sunday brings a stronger chance of rain, with 40% precipitation expected during the afternoon. This could dampen outdoor plans, including late-summer festivals and coastal traffic. Those traveling along I-264 or heading toward the Oceanfront should plan for slower conditions if showers develop.
Next week looks calmer, with partly sunny skies Monday and Tuesday before another round of scattered showers midweek.
Warnings for dangerous surf remain the top concern through Friday night.
