Richmond, VA – Localized flash flooding remains a serious threat across southeast and central Virginia through midnight tonight, with storms dumping 2–4 inches of rain in just hours across already saturated ground.
According to the National Weather Service in Wakefield, a Flood Watch has been extended and expanded to include the entire region north of the Virginia–North Carolina border, including Richmond, Williamsburg, Norfolk, the Northern Neck, and parts of the Virginia and Maryland Eastern Shore. Scattered storms will redevelop this afternoon and evening, posing renewed threats of flash flooding, especially in areas that have received more than 5 inches of rain in recent days.
Low-lying roads, poor drainage zones, and creeks in cities like Petersburg, Emporia, and Tappahannock could be overwhelmed quickly. Some routes may become impassable with little warning. Localized rainfall of 2–4 inches in under two hours is possible, though most areas may see under an inch overall.
Residents are urged to avoid flooded roads, monitor alerts, and prepare for potential road closures or shelter-in-place conditions through the evening.
The Flood Watch remains in effect through midnight Tuesday. More advisories may be issued later today as conditions evolve.
