Virginia Beach, Va. – A Flood Watch goes into effect at 2 p.m. Thursday for southeast Virginia and northeast North Carolina, where heavy rain could cause dangerous flooding by tonight. Streets in low-lying neighborhoods and poor-drainage areas could quickly become impassable as storms move through during the late afternoon and evening hours.

According to the National Weather Service in Wakefield, rainfall totals of 2 to 4 inches are expected through late tonight, with locally higher amounts possible. This includes Virginia Beach, Norfolk, Chesapeake, Suffolk, Newport News, Hampton, and surrounding counties, along with North Carolina’s Camden, Currituck, Hertford, and Pasquotank counties. Flash flooding is most likely near creeks, streams, and underpasses, and could develop rapidly with the heaviest downpours.

Residents are urged to avoid driving through flooded roadways, move vehicles to higher ground, and keep cell phones charged in case of power outages.

The Flood Watch remains in effect until late tonight, with additional advisories possible if rain lingers into early Friday.
