Houston, Texas – Southeast Texas is facing its first potential freeze of the winter season, with sub-freezing temperatures possible late Sunday night into early Monday morning across the Houston metro and surrounding counties.

A Freeze Watch is in effect from late Sunday night through Monday morning for much of the region, including Houston, The Woodlands, Conroe, College Station, Brenham, Sugar Land, Baytown, Rosenberg, and Liberty. According to the National Weather Service in Houston/Galveston, overnight temperatures could fall into the upper 20s to near 32 degrees, cold enough to produce widespread frost and localized freezing conditions.

This cold snap follows the passage of a strong cold front, allowing dry Arctic air to settle across southeast Texas overnight. Inland locations north and west of Houston, including Montgomery, Grimes, Brazos, Burleson, and Washington counties, have the highest risk of dropping below freezing. Portions of Harris, Fort Bend, Chambers, and Liberty counties could also briefly dip to or just below the freezing mark around sunrise Monday.

The impacts could be significant for tender plants, early winter crops, and unprotected outdoor plumbing, especially since this may be the first freeze of the season for many locations. Frost formation is likely even in areas that remain just above freezing.

According to emergency management officials, residents should take steps now to protect sensitive vegetation, wrap or drip exposed pipes, and bring pets indoors overnight. Gardeners and growers are urged to cover plants or move them inside ahead of the coldest temperatures.

While sunshine will help temperatures rebound later Monday, cold conditions will linger through the morning hours. Additional cold nights are possible later this week, making preparation now especially important as winter conditions begin to settle in across southeast Texas.
