Houston, TX – The National Weather Service in Houston/Galveston has issued a Red Flag Warning for much of Southeast Texas, in effect until 6 p.m. Monday, due to strong winds and very low humidity levels that could rapidly spread any fires that start.
Forecasters warn that north winds of 10 to 20 mph, with gusts up to 30 mph, combined with humidity as low as 15%, will create critical fire weather conditions across inland and coastal counties including Harris, Montgomery, Fort Bend, Liberty, Galveston, Brazoria, and Matagorda.
The NWS urges residents to avoid outdoor burning, follow all local burn bans, and properly dispose of cigarettes or flammable materials. “Any fires that develop will be capable of spreading rapidly,” the agency said in its advisory.
At Houston Hobby Airport, early morning readings showed 49°F with light northwest winds. Skies will remain clear and dry through Monday, with highs near 59°F, then warming into the 70s by Tuesday.
Officials remind residents that Red Flag Warnings indicate dangerous fire potential even without ongoing wildfires—conditions where one spark could quickly ignite flames.
