Lake Charles, Louisiana – Warm spring weather will continue across southwest Louisiana and southeast Texas through the weekend before storms arrive late Sunday with the potential for damaging wind gusts.

According to the National Weather Service in Lake Charles, temperatures will climb into the upper 70s to mid-80s Sunday afternoon across communities including Lake Charles, Lafayette, Alexandria and Beaumont as southerly winds increase ahead of an approaching cold front.

The front is expected to move across the region Sunday evening into Sunday night, bringing a slight risk for severe thunderstorms, especially near the Texas–Louisiana border around cities such as Beaumont, Port Arthur and Leesville. Meteorologists say the primary concern will be damaging wind gusts above 58 mph, though isolated hail and a brief tornado cannot be ruled out.

Rain chances will increase sharply Sunday night, with 50 to 80 percent coverage of showers and thunderstorms expected as the front moves through.

Behind the system, cooler and breezy conditions will settle in Monday with highs dropping into the mid-50s across much of southwest Louisiana as north winds gust near 30 mph.

Temperatures will fall even further Monday night into Tuesday morning, when parts of central Louisiana and interior southeast Texas could see a late-season light freeze as lows dip into the low to mid-30s.
