Chattanooga, Tenn. – Heavy rain is set to soak southeast Tennessee and southwest North Carolina through Wednesday, raising the risk of flash flooding in low-lying and mountainous areas, including the Smokies. Rainfall totals could reach 1 to 2 inches in most locations, with some pockets seeing up to 3 inches.

According to the National Weather Service in Morristown, the heaviest downpours are expected late tonight into Wednesday morning. While thunderstorms may develop this afternoon and evening, severe weather is not anticipated. The overnight rain may be less intense due to reduced instability but could still lead to dangerous flooding.

Counties along the Tennessee–North Carolina border, including Monroe, Polk, Cherokee, and Graham, are under close watch for rapid water rises in creeks and rivers. Drivers are urged to avoid flood-prone roads such as U.S. 64 through the Ocoee Gorge and secondary mountain routes.

Residents should clear storm drains, secure outdoor items, and monitor alerts, especially in areas with a history of flooding. Conditions may improve by Thursday, but isolated showers could linger.
