Atlanta, GA – Residents across Georgia, Florida, and South Carolina are set to enjoy a brilliant nighttime show Tuesday as a Super Harvest Moon rises over the Southeast, appearing up to 30% brighter and larger than usual.
According to astronomers, this event combines a supermoon—when the Moon is closest to Earth—with the Harvest Moon, the full moon nearest to the autumn equinox. Together, the two create one of the most vivid and luminous moons of the year, casting a golden glow across the region.
The Moon reaches full illumination at 3:48 a.m. GMT (11:48 p.m. EDT Monday), though the best viewing will come just after sunset Tuesday, when it rises low on the horizon over the Atlantic. This alignment is especially rare—only the 18th early-October Harvest Moon in 80 years, experts note.
Forecasts show mostly clear skies across much of the Southeast, offering excellent visibility from Atlanta and Jacksonville to Charleston and Savannah. Stargazers are encouraged to find open areas, beaches, or waterfronts away from bright city lights to capture the best views.
