Sioux Falls, South Dakota — Strong winds, elevated fire danger, and a sharp drop in temperatures are expected to impact southeast South Dakota and nearby areas from Thursday afternoon into the weekend.
According to the National Weather Service in Sioux Falls, winds will strengthen behind a passing cold front this afternoon. A Wind Advisory is in effect from noon to midnight Thursday for most areas west of the James River, where wind gusts up to 55 miles per hour are expected. A High Wind Watch remains in effect from midnight tonight through 6 p.m. Friday, with gusts potentially reaching 60 miles per hour.
Because of the strong winds and dry conditions, high to very high fire danger is expected this afternoon, especially west of the James River, where the strongest gusts will occur. Officials urge residents to follow all fire restrictions and use caution with ignition sources such as vehicles, outdoor equipment, and open flames.
The National Weather Service also warned that visibility may be reduced at times due to blowing snow tonight into Friday, particularly in open areas.
After snow exits the region late Friday, much colder air will settle in for the weekend. Wind chills between 10 below and 25 below zero are expected, increasing the risk of frostbite and hypothermia for anyone outdoors.
Residents are advised to secure loose objects, use caution when driving—especially in high-profile vehicles—and dress appropriately for extreme cold conditions expected this weekend.
