Charleston, WV – Extreme heat will grip much of the Tri-State region on Sunday, with heat index values expected to climb as high as 103° by midday, prompting a heat advisory across central and western West Virginia, northeast Kentucky, and southeast Ohio.

According to the National Weather Service in Charleston, the advisory will be in effect from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday. Affected areas include Charleston, Huntington, Point Pleasant, and surrounding lowland counties such as Kanawha, Putnam, Cabell, and Jackson. Across the river, Gallia and Lawrence counties in Ohio and Boyd and Greenup counties in Kentucky are also under the alert.

Prolonged outdoor activity in these conditions could lead to heat-related illnesses. Officials urge residents to avoid midday sun, drink water frequently, and never leave children or pets in parked vehicles. Those working outside should take regular breaks in shaded or air-conditioned spaces.

Cooling centers are expected to be available in some counties, and emergency management teams are monitoring for any power strain due to air conditioning demand.

The advisory ends Sunday night, but high temperatures will persist into early next week.
