Wilmington, North Carolina – Drivers across coastal North Carolina could see visibility drop below one mile before sunrise Tuesday as patchy fog develops after a mild, sunny day.
According to the National Weather Service in Wilmington, dry conditions and light winds will hold through Monday afternoon, with highs reaching the low to mid-70s inland and slightly cooler along the immediate coast. Skies remain mostly clear overnight, creating ideal conditions for fog formation after midnight, especially in low-lying and inland areas.
Communities including Wilmington, Jacksonville, Myrtle Beach, and Lumberton may experience localized fog between 3 a.m. and 8 a.m., with the greatest impact on rural roads and near waterways. Portions of U.S. 17, U.S. 74, and I-40 could see sudden visibility drops during the early commute.
While no widespread hazards are expected during the day, the overnight fog could create brief travel concerns. Motorists should use low-beam headlights, reduce speed, and allow extra distance between vehicles.
Conditions improve quickly after sunrise Tuesday as fog lifts and mild weather continues. Additional updates may be issued if fog becomes more widespread overnight.
