WILMINGTON, N.C. – Ice-crusted lawns and a crisp salt breeze greeted southeastern North Carolina early Tuesday as the first hard freeze of the season gripped the region. Temperatures dipped to near 32°F across Brunswick and New Hanover counties, while inland spots like Elizabethtown and Whiteville fell into the upper 20s, ending the growing season for most coastal farms and gardens.
According to the National Weather Service in Wilmington, a Freeze Warning remains in effect until 9 a.m. for much of southeastern North Carolina and parts of northeast South Carolina. Subfreezing temperatures could damage sensitive vegetation and exposed plumbing. As the morning chill fades, another hazard takes shape — a Fire Danger Statement is in effect from 10 a.m. through late afternoon, with gusty westerly winds up to 25 mph and relative humidity dropping below 30%.
Residents are urged to avoid outdoor burning and use caution with heat sources, especially near dry brush or wooded areas. “The combination of cold air and dry fuels can quickly spark or spread flames,” forecasters warned. By midday, bright sunshine will help warm conditions into the upper 40s to near 50°F, though the air will stay brisk through sunset.
A notable warm-up begins Wednesday, with highs climbing into the low 60s, then reaching near 70°F by Friday. The extended stretch of clear skies and light winds heading into the weekend will favor outdoor projects, early holiday decorating, or late-fall leaf cleanup — a sharp turnaround after Tuesday’s icy start.
