Alpine, Texas – Flash flooding could develop across far West Texas and southeastern New Mexico this afternoon as a surge of heavy rain hits the region. Roads through mountainous terrain and low-lying areas may become impassable by evening.
According to the National Weather Service in Midland/Odessa, a Flood Watch is in effect from 1 p.m. CDT through late Sunday night. Areas under threat include Eddy County, the Guadalupe and Davis Mountains, Van Horn, Presidio Valley, and surrounding communities such as Marfa, Carlsbad, and Pecos.
Rainfall totals could overwhelm dry washes, creeks, and low-water crossings, especially along Highway 54 near Van Horn and U.S. 62/180 through the Guadalupe Pass. Flash Flood Warnings may follow quickly if storms intensify this afternoon.
Travelers are urged to avoid flood-prone routes and never attempt to cross flowing water. Residents in vulnerable zones should prepare to move to higher ground if needed. This setup mirrors similar late-June monsoon surges in 2023 that stranded drivers and caused road closures near Fort Davis and Pine Springs.
The Flood Watch remains in effect through at least 6 p.m. MDT. Additional watches or warnings could be issued as storms evolve.
