Whites City, N.M. — A small earthquake shook parts of southern New Mexico Monday evening, registering a magnitude 2.5 about 58 kilometers south of Whites City, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The tremor occurred around 12:38 p.m. local time (7:38 p.m. UTC) at a shallow depth of 6.2 kilometers.
According to the Texas Seismological Network (TexNet), no damage or injuries were reported, and no felt reports had been logged as of late Monday. The quake’s epicenter was near the Texas border, roughly between the Guadalupe Mountains and northern Chihuahua, Mexico.
Residents in nearby Carlsbad and along U.S. Highway 62/180 may have experienced a brief rumble, though such low-magnitude quakes are typically only faintly felt. Emergency management officials advise that while Monday’s event poses no current threat, residents should still ensure their emergency kits are stocked as seismic activity occasionally occurs in the region.
No additional aftershocks had been recorded by early evening, but the USGS continues to monitor the area for further activity.
