Detroit, Michigan – An oppressive heat wave will grip Southeast Michigan starting Saturday, with extreme heat and humidity creating dangerous conditions through Tuesday evening.
According to the National Weather Service in Detroit, an Extreme Heat Watch is in effect beginning Saturday morning. Daytime highs will climb into the 90s across the region, with heat indices ranging from 96 to 104 degrees due to high humidity. Overnight lows will stay in the 70s, offering little relief from the sweltering conditions.
Cities under the alert include Detroit, Ann Arbor, Flint, Saginaw, Monroe, Adrian, Pontiac, Port Huron, and Bad Axe. Outdoor workers, vulnerable residents without air conditioning, and children are especially at risk. Emergency officials urge residents to limit physical activity, wear light-colored clothing, and stay hydrated. Those without access to cooling should locate nearby cooling centers. High humidity will persist into Tuesday night, marking one of the hottest stretches of the summer so far. Similar conditions haven’t been recorded in the region since July 2012.
Warnings remain in effect through Tuesday evening, and additional advisories may be issued if temperatures remain elevated mid-week.
