LANSING, Mich. – A gray sky and damp chill hang over Michigan this morning, but colder changes are already on the move. Rain will spread north through the day before transitioning to snow by Sunday morning—ushering in Detroit’s first real taste of winter weather for November.

According to the National Weather Service, widespread rain arrives this evening, becoming a mix of rain and wet snow overnight as temperatures fall into the mid-30s. By Sunday, the system deepens over the Great Lakes, pulling colder air south and changing precipitation to all snow for much of southeast Michigan. Light accumulations are possible across the Detroit metro area, with heavier bursts north toward Flint and Pontiac.

Travelers along I-75, I-94, and I-96 should prepare for slick conditions late Sunday into early Monday. While snowfall totals will stay modest—generally under one inch—the timing may still impact early commutes, high school playoff games, and Veterans Day event setups. Gusty north winds up to 25 mph could reduce visibility briefly during heavier showers.

Temperatures tumble behind the system, with highs near 36 Monday and lows dipping into the 20s Monday night. Veterans Day will be brisk and partly sunny, but another system may bring additional snow or a rain/snow mix by Tuesday.

The bigger story may be the trend: this is likely Michigan’s first true “winter tease” of the season. With Arctic air spreading across the northern U.S., forecasters are watching for another potential cold surge before Thanksgiving—possibly setting the stage for an active late-November pattern.
