Detroit, MI – Drivers across southeast Michigan should prepare for widespread rain today, with the potential for slick and icy conditions by Friday morning as temperatures drop rapidly.

According to the National Weather Service in Detroit/Pontiac, a strong area of low pressure will move through the northern Great Lakes on Thursday, bringing steady rain to much of the region from Thursday morning through the evening hours. Rainfall totals of 0.30 to 0.60 inches are expected across Metro Detroit and surrounding counties.

While widespread flooding is not anticipated, forecasters say the impacts of rainfall remain uncertain, and ponding on area roadways is possible, especially in low-lying and poor drainage areas during heavier rainfall.

The bigger concern may develop after the rain ends. Officials warn that a flash freeze of ground moisture is possible Friday morning, as colder air surges into the region overnight. Wet roads, bridges, sidewalks, and parking lots could quickly turn icy, increasing the risk for hazardous travel during the Friday morning commute.

Areas expected to see the highest rainfall totals include Detroit, Ann Arbor, Flint, Port Huron, Saginaw, Adrian, and surrounding communities across southeast Michigan.

Residents are urged to use caution while driving today, reduce speed in heavy rain, and remain alert for standing water on roads. By late tonight into early Friday, drivers should watch closely for black ice, particularly on bridges and untreated surfaces.

The National Weather Service encourages residents to continue monitoring local forecasts as conditions evolve through tonight and into Friday.
