Detroit, Michigan – Windshields glaze quickly this morning as light freezing rain taps against cold pavement across southeast Michigan. Side streets shine, overpasses feel slick, and the winter driving season makes a loud return just as holiday travel ramps up.

According to the National Weather Service in Detroit/Pontiac, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect through late afternoon. Freezing rain mixes with snow and sleet, producing ice accumulations of one to two tenths of an inch. Snow and sleet totals may approach one inch in spots.

The highest travel risk stretches from Detroit through Ann Arbor, Pontiac, and Flint, including I-75, I-94, and I-96. Road crews are treating highways, but untreated surfaces, ramps, and sidewalks remain hazardous. Slow down and leave extra space if heading out.

Temperatures hover near freezing through midday before slowly nudging upward. Some areas may briefly change to plain rain this afternoon, especially closer to the Ohio border. Even then, slush and lingering ice could refreeze after sunset as colder air returns.

Tonight turns quieter but colder. Saturday stays mostly cloudy with highs near the mid-30s, offering a short break for travelers. Rain chances return late Saturday night and increase Sunday, when temperatures spike near 50 degrees. Wet roads will dominate much of the day.

Another sharp shift follows. Rain may flip to snow Sunday night into Monday as colder air surges back in. Gusty winds and falling temperatures could trigger flash freezing, especially where water pools today and Sunday.

By the time New Year’s week 2026 begins, southeast Michigan settles into a colder, wintry pattern. Snow chances linger early in the week, with lows dipping into the teens.
