Detroit, MI – Residents across Southeast Michigan should prepare for possible severe weather this evening, with storms expected to move through during peak travel hours.

According to the National Weather Service in Detroit/Pontiac, scattered showers and thunderstorms are likely throughout Sunday, September 21. The strongest storms are forecast between 4 PM and 10 PM, carrying the potential for damaging wind gusts up to 60 mph.

Forecasters say the main hazard will be isolated severe thunderstorms that could bring highly localized winds ranging from 40–60 mph. While widespread severe weather is not expected, the NWS warns that even a single storm cell could cause tree damage, downed power lines, or temporary power outages.

The agency urges residents to stay alert and have multiple ways to receive weather warnings, particularly for those planning outdoor activities or traveling this evening. Motorists may encounter reduced visibility and hazardous road conditions if storms develop during the evening commute.

Weather officials emphasize that conditions can change rapidly. Updates will be posted throughout the day as storms develop across Wayne, Oakland, Macomb, Washtenaw, and surrounding counties.
