Detroit, Michigan – A High Wind Watch is in effect for all of southeast Michigan from late tonight through Monday, with strong winds and possible snow squalls expected to create hazardous travel conditions and the risk of power outages.

According to the National Weather Service in Detroit/Pontiac, southwest winds of 25 to 35 mph are forecast to develop overnight, with gusts potentially reaching 50 to 60 mph on Monday. The watch is currently in effect from 1 a.m. through 10 p.m. Monday and covers the entire southeast portion of the state, including the Detroit metro area, Ann Arbor, Flint, and Port Huron.

Forecasters warned that the strong winds could blow down trees and power lines, leading to scattered power outages. Travel may become difficult, especially for high-profile vehicles, as crosswinds increase throughout the day. Blowing snow may further reduce visibility at times.

In addition to the wind threat, lake-effect snow showers are expected to develop Monday. The National Weather Service said scattered to numerous snow showers may produce quick bursts of snow, with highly variable accumulations ranging from a dusting to around 2 inches in some locations. Brief snow squalls are also possible, which could rapidly reduce visibility and create whiteout conditions for short periods.

Blowing and drifting snow may make snowfall totals difficult to measure and could quickly lead to snow-covered and slick roadways. Forecasters emphasized that conditions may change rapidly, even over short distances, especially during peak travel hours.

The combination of strong winds, blowing snow, and reduced visibility may significantly impact the Monday morning and evening commutes. Drivers are urged to slow down, increase following distance, and remain alert for sudden drops in visibility.

Residents are encouraged to secure loose outdoor items ahead of the wind event and monitor the latest forecasts, watches, and any potential warnings. Updates and additional information are available at weather.gov/dtx.
