Detroit, Michigan – Drivers across Southeast Michigan are facing dangerous travel conditions Tuesday as dense fog sharply reduces visibility along key highways, creating a heightened risk for crashes through the evening commute.
According to the National Weather Service office in Detroit/Pontiac, a Dense Fog Advisory remains in effect until 9 p.m. for areas mainly along and south of the I-96 corridor. Visibility may drop to one-quarter mile or less at times, particularly near major interstates including I-75, I-94, I-275, and I-696.
The advisory covers a wide swath of Southeast Michigan, including Detroit, Pontiac, Ann Arbor, Flint, Howell, Monroe, Adrian, and Port Huron. Motorists traveling between Oakland, Wayne, Washtenaw, Genesee, and Monroe counties could encounter sudden visibility drops, especially near low-lying areas and during periods of light wind.
Transportation officials urge drivers to slow down, use low-beam headlights, and leave extra following distance. Sudden braking and lane changes can be especially hazardous when fog thickens without warning. Drivers are also advised to allow extra travel time and avoid unnecessary trips if possible.
Conditions are expected to gradually improve later tonight as fog dissipates, but officials warn that additional advisories could be issued if visibility fails to improve. Travelers should continue monitoring local alerts before heading out this evening.
