Detroit, Michigan – Severe thunderstorms are expected to sweep through southeast Michigan Wednesday afternoon and evening, bringing the potential for damaging winds, heavy rain, and isolated tornadoes. The primary threat is anticipated between 4 p.m. and 10 p.m. as a line of powerful storms moves across the region.

According to the National Weather Service in Detroit/Pontiac, an Enhanced Risk for severe weather is in place for Wednesday. The greatest threat is centered along and north of the M-59 corridor, impacting communities across Macomb, Oakland, Livingston, and St. Clair counties. Forecasters warn that damaging wind gusts are the main concern, though large hail is also possible.

Residents in the affected areas, including Detroit, Warren, and Sterling Heights, should prepare for potential power outages and hazardous travel conditions. It is advised to secure loose outdoor objects, such as patio furniture and garbage cans, before the storms arrive. Motorists should remain vigilant for sudden downpours, which could lead to localized flooding and reduced visibility on major roadways like I-75, I-94, and I-696.

The stormy weather is expected to clear out late Wednesday night, paving the way for a much calmer and sunnier Juneteenth on Thursday. Temperatures will be pleasant, with a high near 78°F. The pleasant weather continues into the weekend, with mostly sunny skies and temperatures climbing into the high 80s by Friday and into the low 90s for Saturday. The clear and warm pattern is expected to hold through early next week, with Monday seeing a high near 97°F.

A five-day forecast for the Detroit area shows the transition from severe weather back to a summer pattern:

  • Wednesday: High 86°F. Showers and thunderstorms likely, some severe.
  • Thursday (Juneteenth): High 78°F. Mostly sunny.
  • Friday: High 86°F. Mostly sunny.
  • Saturday: High 91°F. Mostly sunny.
  • Sunday: High 96°F. Mostly sunny.
