Detroit, Michigan – More than 9 million residents across southeast Michigan could face damaging winds and dangerous lightning through 9 p.m. Friday as clusters of severe thunderstorms sweep east across the region.

According to the National Weather Service in Detroit, a Severe Thunderstorm Watch is in effect for cities including Detroit, Lansing, Ann Arbor, Jackson, Kalamazoo, and Monroe. Scattered storms are developing this afternoon with the potential for wind gusts up to 70 mph, quarter-size hail, and frequent lightning. The highest risk period runs from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m., as storms push from west to east.

Metro Detroit, Flint, and Saginaw could experience localized flooding in urban areas due to heavy downpours. Outdoor events and evening commutes may be disrupted. If you’re planning to be outside, have a shelter plan ready—lightning can strike miles ahead of a storm.

Drivers are urged to use caution on I-75, I-94, and I-96 where sudden wind gusts and downpours could reduce visibility. Residents should charge devices and monitor alerts in case warnings are issued.

Storms are expected to taper late tonight, but additional watches or warnings may follow if new cells develop.
