Detroit, Michigan – Thunderstorms are expected to sweep across southeast Michigan Friday afternoon, with strong cells likely to develop south of a Saginaw to Bad Axe line, raising concerns for hail, urban flooding, and wind gusts up to 55 mph.
According to the National Weather Service in Detroit, scattered to numerous thunderstorms will move in between 1 p.m. and 9 p.m., especially impacting cities like Detroit, Ann Arbor, Pontiac, and Flint. Rain totals may reach up to 1 inch, and localized downpours could lead to temporary flooding in low-lying urban areas.
The strongest storms could produce half-inch hail and frequent lightning. Cities including Howell, Monroe, and Lapeer are also at risk for dangerous wind gusts between 45 and 55 mph, especially during peak storm hours late this afternoon.
Residents are urged to stay weather-aware, avoid driving through flooded roads, and secure outdoor items ahead of gusty winds. Power outages are possible in storm-affected zones.
Warm, humid air is fueling the system, with highs in the low to mid-70s from Ann Arbor to Pontiac. Storm coverage should diminish after 9 p.m., but additional weather alerts may be issued if conditions evolve.
