DETROIT, Mich. – A powerful fall storm system will sweep across southeast Michigan Sunday, bringing rounds of heavy rain, gusty winds, and isolated thunderstorms. The National Weather Service warns of possible 40-mph gusts and localized flooding, especially across Wayne, Oakland, and Macomb counties.

According to the National Weather Service office in Detroit/Pontiac, showers will develop Saturday afternoon before intensifying into Sunday morning. Rainfall totals between 1.25 and 2.25 inches are expected, with isolated spots exceeding 2.5 inches. Thunderstorms could produce brief heavy downpours and wind gusts between 50 and 60 mph. Travel along I-75, I-94, and I-696 may become hazardous due to ponding and reduced visibility.

Drivers should slow down on wet roads, allow extra time for commutes, and avoid flooded underpasses. Outdoor Halloween decorations should be secured, as wind gusts may knock down lightweight items. The storm risk decreases by late Sunday afternoon, but blustery northwest winds will continue into the evening as temperatures drop sharply into the 40s.

Monday brings welcome relief with sunshine and highs near 63°F. The air will feel crisp and calm, marking a transition to drier fall weather through midweek. Another chance of light showers returns Tuesday before sunshine dominates the latter half of the week—ideal for leaf-viewing and pumpkin patch outings.

Southeast Michigan’s third week of October will start stormy but finish bright and cool, signaling fall’s firm grip across the region.
