Detroit, Michigan – Dangerous air quality is gripping Southeast Michigan Tuesday, with unhealthy pollution levels forcing residents indoors from Detroit to Pontiac and across much of the region. Smoke and fine particulates have pushed the Air Quality Index into the “Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups” category, with some areas reaching Red (Unhealthy) levels.

According to the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy, the Air Quality Advisory covers Wayne, Oakland, Macomb, Washtenaw, and surrounding counties. The alert remains in effect until midnight, warning that elevated PM2.5 levels pose a risk to children, seniors, and anyone with heart or lung conditions.

Detroit, Ann Arbor, and Flint could see visibility drop with hazy skies, and anyone with respiratory issues is urged to limit time outdoors. Local health officials recommend closing windows overnight, running air conditioning with high-quality filters, and postponing strenuous activity. Outdoor burning and the use of wood stoves are strongly discouraged, as these can add to already high pollution levels.

Conditions are expected to improve by Wednesday as winds shift, but another round of hazy weather is possible later in the week. Stay tuned for further updates, as advisories may be extended if air quality does not recover.
