Wichita, Kansas – Roads across southeast Kansas are dealing with high water after storms dumped nearly 4 inches of rain in some areas overnight, creating localized flooding hazards for the Thursday morning drive.

According to the National Weather Service in Wichita, the heaviest rainfall totals were concentrated in southeast Kansas, with Erie receiving 3.94 inches, Independence measuring 3.75 inches, and Peru recording 3.45 inches in just 24 hours ending around 7 a.m. Thursday. Additional reports include over 3 inches near Chanute and Galesburg, with Coffeyville nearing 2.7 inches.

Low-lying roads, rural highways, and flood-prone intersections across Neosho, Montgomery, and Labette counties are most at risk for standing water. Drivers along U.S. 169, U.S. 400, and nearby county roads may encounter water-covered pavement, especially where drainage is limited.

While the heaviest rain has shifted east, runoff continues to pose a hazard through the day. Even shallow water can stall vehicles or hide washed-out sections of road.

Residents are urged to avoid flooded roadways and remain alert for changing conditions, especially in areas that received more than 3 inches of rain overnight.

Flood concerns may linger into the afternoon as water recedes, and additional advisories could be issued if new rainfall develops.
