Burlington, Iowa – Thick fog is making travel hazardous early Saturday across parts of Iowa, Illinois, and northeast Missouri, with drivers in Burlington and Macomb facing visibility below a quarter mile in some spots.
According to the National Weather Service in the Quad Cities, areas of dense fog began developing before dawn across southeastern Iowa, far northeast Missouri, and west-central Illinois, especially in river valleys and low-lying terrain. Cities impacted include Fairfield, Fort Madison, Mount Pleasant, Keosauqua, and Oquawka.
Motorists should expect quickly changing visibility along U.S. Highways 34, 61, and 136, particularly near the Mississippi River. Officials advise using low-beam headlights and reducing speed while traveling. Conditions may improve after 8 a.m. as the sun rises and temperatures increase.
If fog thickens further, a Dense Fog Advisory may be issued. Until then, residents are urged to check local travel conditions and allow extra time for morning commutes.
Visibility is expected to improve by mid-morning Saturday, but isolated pockets of fog could linger longer near rivers and wooded areas.
